The regular Tiguan R and the R Grid feel identical to drive. That’s a good thing. The 2.0-litre turbo is smooth and quiet at low speeds, with plenty of torque for effortless punch low in the rev range. Thanks to the seven-speed transmission, it cruises around town without much fuss in Sport mode. It’s also not just a rocket strapped to a roller skate.
On tight, twisting country backroads, the Tiguan R is more agile than you’d expect, with solid body control and plenty of traction from the all-wheel drive system when the adaptive dampers are set to Race.
It doesn’t crash and bash over potholes and speed bumps and does an excellent job isolating occupants from poor road surfaces, even at high speeds. Although entry-level models with smaller wheels and larger sidewalls are more comfortable, they are not as durable.
Volkswagen Tiguan R Grid: Safety
Based on 2016 tests, the Volkswagen Tiguan received a five-star ANCAP safety rating. It received scores of 96% for adult occupant protection, 80% for child occupant protection, 68% for pedestrian protection (pre-update), and 68% for safety assistance. Compared to the standard model, the Tiguan R Grid Edition lacks blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and proactive occupant assist.
