Is Labor Day always on the same day?

Every year, Labor Day is observed on the first Monday in September. Labor Day falls on Monday, September 5 this year.

How was Labor Day initiated?

There are contrasting hypotheses at the beginning of Labor Day. According to the US Department of Labor, on May 12, 1882, during a conference of the New York Central Labor Union, co-founders Samuel Gompers and Peter J. McGuire of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters proposed a holiday honoring the working man.

The festival, which would take place in September, would feature a street procession and picnic that “would publicly highlight the power and esprit de corps of the trade and labor groups.”

The eight-hour workday was eventually widely accepted in the US thanks in part to McGuire’s involvement in the trade union movement, particularly during the significant labor strikes of 1886 and 1890.
