The Jeep Grand Cherokees and Ford Explorers began providing upscale, top-tier models, and soon after that, the Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes began dipping their toes in the water. Then, the gates of hell opened.
Many are on the market today in every style, size, and price range. There are high-performance gas-guzzler SUVs like the BMW X5 M and Cadillac Escalade and electric luxury SUVs like the Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-Pace. Even sports car manufacturers Porsche, Aston Martin, and Lamborghini are participating.

Mercedes-Benz GLB Class
Most subcompact luxury SUVs offer questionable value due to their small, subpar interiors and essential driving characteristics. You’d be far better off buying a fully loaded, non-luxury compact SUV for less money. But the Mercedes GLB is unique. Few other subcompact SUVs, luxury or otherwise, can equal the room it offers because of their boxy form, and their interior styling and feature set are comparable to more expensive Mercedes vehicles. Although the quality and driving refinement aren’t quite up to GLC standards, the difference is still acceptable and appropriate for the amount you save. Nothing questionable about purchasing a GLB.

Volkswagen Taos
The 2024 Volkswagen Taos is another option for consumers looking for reasonably priced crossovers and SUVs. The subcompact Taos, albeit smaller than the tiny VW Tiguan, has a surprisingly spacious back seat and a huge load space; its practicality even won it an Editors’ Choice award. The smallest and least priced VW SUV borrows styling ideas from both the Tiguan and the mid-size VW Atlas.

It’s not as sleek or rugged as competitors like the Mazda CX-30 and Chevy Trailblazer, but it’s nonetheless attractive. The Taos also has a new four-cylinder turbocharged engine and maybe has an all-wheel drive. The 2024 Taos is an appealing alternative, considering its accessible driver aids and attractive features.
Volvo XC40
The even more attractive 2024 XC40 is a trendy and young SUV in the already fashionable series of Volvo SUVs. The entry-level model has a T4 badged 184 hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the most spirited model is the T5, which has 248 hp and comes standard with all-wheel drive. The XC40 also features a ton of technology, including optional driver assistance features from more expensive Volvo vehicles, such as the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving mode.

The XC40 isn’t all flair, though. Its careful interior planning, ingenious storage solutions, and roomy cargo compartment have earned it a spot on our Editors’ Choice list. Additionally, Volvo has a higher price tag when compared to German competitors like the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA-class.
Kia Soul
The Kia Soul, which has outlasted the Honda Element, Nissan Cube, and Scion xB, is the undisputed king of toaster-shaped cars. Today, it competes with more conventionally designed subcompact crossovers like the Kia Seltos, Jeep Renegade, and Chevrolet Trailblazer, but it hasn’t bowed to their dimensions. We granted it an Editors’ Choice award because we think it’s still a unique cube and like it so much.

The Soul has a powerful 201-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine as an option in addition to the regular 147-hp four-cylinder. The boxy design offers enough space for four persons to travel comfortably and a sizable cargo area to store their belongings. You’ll need to search elsewhere if you need all-wheel drive.
BMW X1
Avoid obsessing over the bread-box design of the 2024 BMW X1. It’s a little, comical SUV that is valuable and manageable to live with. All models share the same 228-hp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, which is vibrant enough to move the little X1 around town Swiftlyn. While still reasonably efficient, it achieved 29 mpg on the interstate during our tests. As expected from the BMW brand, the handling is precise, and the ride is smooth.

Along with providing a fun driving experience, the X1’s spacious luggage area and easy-to-fold-flat back seats make it possible to transport more significant objects. Due to its versatility, it has received a spot on our Editors’ Choice list for 2022. BMW also produces the more fashionable X2, which is undoubtedly much sportier to drive, but we believe the X1 provides a superior balance of driving enjoyment and usefulness.
Luxury SUV 2024 Models: BMW X2
The 2022 BMW X2 stands out with a fastback roofline and a hot-rod variation that hustles, even though it shares its underpinnings with the more subduedly designed X1 SUV. The X2 is quick to drive on winding roads thanks to its agile handling; some may argue that it drives more like a hot hatch than an SUV.

We like the M35i’s more potent 302-hp engine to the base model’s 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, which produces 228-hp. We’re not troubled by the sloping roofline that reduces passenger and cargo room; we even granted the X2 an Editors’ Choice award. The X2 is one of our favourite small SUVs because of its driving attitude.
