Labor Day Meaning

Most people associate Labor Day with a day off from work and the opportunity to say goodbye to summer. However, why is it known as Labor Day? Labor Day is a holiday set aside to honor those who labor hard. Since 1894, it has been observed as a national holiday in both the United States and Canada. According to Samuel Gompers, the founding and longstanding president of the American Federation of Labor, “Labor Day differs in every fundamental manner from the other holidays of the year in any country.”

Who first observed Labor Day?

Like other cultural practices, its beginnings are still a little ambiguous. According to some records, Peter J. McGuire, who served as the general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and was a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, is credited with having proposed the idea of a day to recognize hardworking men and women. However, a lot of people believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, and not Peter McGuire, truly founded the holiday.

Recent studies indicate that in 1882 while serving as the Central Labor Union’s secretary in New York, Matthew Maguire proposed the concept for the holiday. However, it is clear that the Central Labor Union supported the Labor Day concept and established a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

How did Labor Day begin?

At the start of Labor Day, there are opposing theories. According to the US Department of Labor, co-founders Samuel Gompers and Peter J. McGuire of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters suggested a holiday commemorating the working man on May 12, 1882, during a meeting of the New York Central Labor Union.

A street parade and picnic would be part of the event, which would take place in September, and they would “publicly showcase the power and esprit de corps of the trade and labor unions.”

Due in large part to McGuire’s engagement in the trade union movement, notably during the important labor strikes of 1886 and 1890, the eight-hour workday was finally universally recognized in the US.
