Origin

  1. J. McGuire, Vice President of the American Federation of Labor, is widely regarded as the father of American Labor Day.

Even as the trade union and labor movements emerged in the late nineteenth century, various groups of trade unionists picked a number of days to commemorate labor. Labor Day, a September holiday in the United States, was initially described in the early 1880s. There are several theories about how the event occurred. Descendants of two men with identical surnames claim their great-grandfather invented the festival.

According to one early history of Labor Day, the celebration began in connection with a General Assembly of the Knights of Labor held in September 1882 in New York City. A public procession of several labor organizations was held on September 5 in connection with this clandestine Knights assembly under the auspices of the Central Labor Union (CLU) of New York.   In the midst of this effective public demonstration, CLU Secretary Matthew Maguire is credited with recommending that a national Labor Day holiday be observed on the first Monday of each September.

Happy Labor Day and May Day in the US

The date of May 1 (an ancient European folk vacation known as May Day) originated in 1886 as an alternative work holiday, subsequently being recognized as International Workers’ Day. The date originated with the American Federation of Labor’s 1885 conference, which passed a resolution asking for the implementation of the eight-hour day on May 1, 1886. While negotiations were planned to accomplish the reduced work day, the use of a strike to impose this demand was acknowledged, with May 1 proposed as a date for coordinated strike action. The date’s proximity to the murderous Haymarket tragedy of May 4, 1886, heightened May First’s radical notoriety.

Happy Labor Day USA organizations were divided at the time regarding whether a holiday commemorating workers should be observed, with some calling for the ongoing emphasis on the September march-and-picnic date whereas others desired the designation of the more politically sensitive date of May 1. Conservative Democratic President Grover Cleveland was concerned that a May 1 labor holiday would become a remembrance of the Haymarket affair, strengthening socialist and anarchist movements who supported the May 1 commemoration around the world. He publicly backed the September Labor Day holiday with a less provocative option in 1887, formally establishing the day as a United States federal holiday in 1894 with a statute he signed.

On May 1, the United States has observed Loyalty Day and Law Day since the mid-1950s. Unlike Labor Day, neither is a legitimate public holiday (government institutions and most companies do not close to observe), therefore they have remained largely unknown. In a few locations, Loyalty Day is formally observed, while some professional associations host Law Day celebrations to honor the rule of law.
