Grandparents Day USA: Sunday, September 10

National Grandparents Day is traditionally celebrated in the US and Canada on the first Sunday following Labor Day, which falls on September 10, 2023, this year. Grandparents Day can be celebrated in the US with joyful family gatherings, trips that involve Grandma and Grandpa, and even community-wide public activities that honor grandparents.

History of Grandparents Day

Russell Capper, who was nine years old at the time, suggested in a letter to President Nixon in 1969 that a day be set aside to honor grandparents. The Personal Secretary to the President, Rose Mary Woods, responded to his letter on June 12 with the following: “Dear Russell, We appreciate you writing President Nixon a letter. Although we appreciate your concept for a Grandparents Day, the President typically releases proclamations designating days for particular commemoration only when a Congressional resolution permits him to do so. With best regards, Sincerely, Rose Mary Woods, President’s secretary.

The U.S. Senate and President Jimmy Carter recognized Marian McQuade for creating National Grandparents Day following the publication of her letter. Young people needed to understand the worth of their elders and the contributions they had given to society over the years, according to McQuade. She recommended the kids “adopt” their grandparents so they may learn about their struggles and future goals.

As part of a joint senate resolution introduced in 1977, Senator Randolph and other senators asked the president to declare the first Sunday in September after Labor Day each year as National Grandparents’ Day.  Congress adopted the resolution recognizing the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. The proclamation was signed by Jimmy Carter on August 3, 1978, but it wasn’t recognized until 1979.
