  • The American Revolution began on April 19, 1775. The first shots were fired between colonists and British troops during the Battles of Lexington and Concord (Mass.). Following these initial military conflicts, tensions between Britain and her American colonists grew.
  • The Second Continental Congress voted for independence from Britain on July 2, 1776.
  • On July 4, 1776, Congress approved the final draft of the Declaration of Independence, which had been written by Thomas Jefferson (in June) and edited by John Adams and Benjamin Franklin.
  • The first public reading of the Declaration of Independence took place on July 8, 1776, at the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Other readings occurred later that day in Trenton, New Jersey, and Easton, Pennsylvania. Printer John Dunlap printed about 200 copies of the Pronouncement on July 4, 1776. These were known as “Dunlap Broadsides,” and they were divided up throughout the 13 colonies.
  • However, the Declaration was not officially signed until August 2, 1776. The president of the Congress, John Hancock, was the first of 56 commissioners to sign this enlarged version in large, bold letters. The Declaration of Independence became official on August 4, 1776, after delegates from the Continental Congress signed it.
