History of Canada Day

Happy Canada Day, everyone! Today we celebrate our beautiful country and all that it stands for. But how did Canada’s day come to be? Let’s take a look. The roots of Canada day are traced back to 1867 when the British North America Act was passed. This act created the Dominion of Canada, which consisted of four provinces: Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. Each province had its own legislature and was essentially autonomous.

However, as Canada began to grow and expand, there was a feeling among many that the country needed a stronger central government. In 1982, this idea was finally realized with the passage of the Constitution Act, which patriated the Canadian Constitution from Great Britain and officially proclaimed Canada as a federal state. With a strong central government in place, Canada day could finally be celebrated nationwide. Each province continued to celebrate its own unique version of Canada day, but on July 1st all Canadians could come together and celebrate our country’s birthday. And so, the tradition continues today!

Why Do We Celebrate Happy Canada Day on July 1?

Happy Canada Day is a time to celebrate the people, places, and things that make Canada great. But why do we celebrate it on July 1? The answer is simple: because this is the day that Canada became a country. It all started in 1867 when British North America united and formed the Dominion of Canada. This new nation was created by combining Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario into one country – even though those provinces were still colonies of Great Britain at this time. The new dominion also consisted of Manitoba (1870), British Columbia (1871), Prince Edward Island (1873), and Alberta (1905).

Canada day is a time to celebrate everything that makes our country so great. From the traditions we observe to the food we eat, there’s always something special about celebrating Canada day. One of the most popular traditions is watching the Canada day parade. This year, the parade will be held in Ottawa and will start at 9:45 am. If you’re not in Ottawa, you can watch it live on CBC.

Another tradition is attending a citizenship ceremony. This is a great way to witness new Canadians officially becoming part of our country. You can find a list of ceremonies happening in your area on CIC’s website. And finally, what would Canada day be without some delicious food? One of our favorites is poutine – fries topped with cheese curds and gravy. If you’re looking for something a little more festive, try a Canadian apple pie!
